Its actual biochemical name is L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF). It is believed that more than 50% of the population has a genetic mutation in the MTHFR gene. Therefore, you may not be able to reach sufficient methylfolate levels through food alone. L-5-MTHF may promote methylation in patients with MTHFR polymorphisms because it bypasses the MTHFR enzyme.
