Cats, such as "beckoning cats," have been cherished by merchants as their appearance attracts people and brings prosperity to business. During the Edo period, when sericulture was thriving in the Tohoku region, cats were kept in large numbers to protect silkworms from mice. Records suggest that a cat that catches mice was traded for five ryo, compared to one ryo for a horse. This piece is dyed using the Hosokawa dyeing technique, which involves repeating the "Itaba, Konya, Mizumoto, and Date" dyeing process at least twice to complete a single pattern. This technique requires advanced techniques for fitting the pattern and adjusting the colors.
