It is generally considered the appropriate size to hold osechi ryori (New Year's dishes) for 5-6 people. This black tiered box, modeled after the Azekura-zukuri (storehouse-style) construction, is used for osechi ryori (New Year's dishes) and picnic bento boxes. The inside of the tiered box is vermilion. As an evergreen, pine trees are considered a symbol of longevity, and young pine trees in particular are considered auspicious.
